Obesity continues to increase in the United States and throughout the world. The leptin by fat cells and pancreatic insulin B cells are created in direct proportion of body fat. Obese people have higher levels of these two hormones than lean people. Recent studies show that another hormone, estrogen, also has a similar effect.
When estrogen in the rat hypothalamus receptors have been destroyed, rates consume more food, burning less energy and have become obese. Mr Clegg Estrogen wanted to determine the effect of reduced brain estrogen levels. She studied the estrogen receptor alpha (ERa) in the hypothalamus, where the brain regulates body temperature, hunger and thirst. She learned that the ventromedial (VNM) nucleus and the arcuate nucleus react of hormones and other signals control energy intake and expenditure. A gene-silencing technique called Mr Clegg authorized RNA interference stop alpha receptor in the female rats VNM. In other parts of the brain estrogen receptors are not affected. Decreased estrogen levels, therefore has as metabolic rate and energy levels. Rats is fast becoming the glucose intolerant.
